“Home, Angelo,” I told my driver when we were back in the car. He nodded, and I closed the divider that separated the front seats from the back.

I couldn’t let myself become weak. I had rules. It was how I operated in life. Breaking one of them meant being tempted to break all of them.

But Amber…

I glanced at her. She was positively glowing tonight. The dress fit her figure like a glove, and as she crossed her leg the fabric moved over her skin like dark ocean waves at night.

It shocked me how much I wanted to trust her.

For years, I had struggled to trust anyone other than Leo. The betrayal in Belfast was too much. I wouldn’t let anyone get close, not even a little bit. It was so bad that it had taken a long time to trust Riley, the easygoing bartender, to make my tea. All the man did was pour drinks and pick up the slack Carli left behind, yet for the first two months I had looked at him with distrust.

So why was Amber different?

Because I want her.

I knew it deep down. I was attracted to her. No, more than that: I wanted to ravage her. I wanted to feel her body against mine and touch her bare skin. I was letting that desire cloud my judgement.

Yet I didn’t care.

The first few minutes of the car ride were silent. I wondered if I had said something wrong. Maybe the way I had touched her hand in the bar was inappropriate. The quiet ate at me

“Thank you again for coming,” I finally said. “You have been an immense help. I’ll make sure you’re given a full night’s worth of tips to make up for it.”

“I wasn’t on the work schedule, so I didn’t miss anything,” she said with a giggle. “But I’ll gladly take it anyway if you think my services are valuable.”

She’s in this for the money. It wasn’t a bad thing by any means—that’s why all of us were in this business, or any other. To make money. I liked knowing someone’s desires. When I had no idea what motivated someone, that was cause for concern.

I glanced at her again. The way she was sitting exposed her left leg up to the knee, revealing her smooth skin. It was impossible not to appreciate how sexy she was. More than the other girls at my clubs. They were attractive in a fake, plastic way. Somehow, Amber was more real. Like she was the only one in the world not faking it.

“For someone who insisted this wasn’t a date, you’re looking at me awfully hard,” she said.

Shite. This was why I rarely drank in the company of others. The whiskey went to my head and made me careless.

“You look grand in that dress.”

“That’s what you said at the beginning of the night.”

“It’s worth saying twice.”

Amber smiled at me. “And you look dashing in your suit. Most of the club owners I’ve known are greasy, sleazy guys who dress like used car salesmen.
